Super Eagles news: Ajayi explains how Hull City can maintain EPL start

Retold by Oddsrama · 14 October 2026

Hull City's promising return to the Premier League has been built on a solid defensive foundation, and Super Eagles centre-back Semi Ajayi is a key reason why. After earning promotion through the Championship play-offs with a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough, the Tigers have made a slick start to life back in the top flight, collecting three wins from six matches to sit eighth with nine points. Ajayi has been virtually ever-present in that defence, and he's already made his mark in memorable fashion—scoring Hull's first Premier League goal in nine years during an eye-catching 2-0 opening-day win over Manchester United.

When reflecting on that historic moment, Ajayi kept perspective sharp. Yes, netting against a heavyweight like United carried extra weight, but he was quick to emphasise that the three points mattered far more than any individual glory. That mentality—grinding for results rather than chasing headlines—is precisely what Hull will need if they're to avoid the yo-yo label and cement themselves as genuine Premier League operators. The Tigers drew 2-2 with Everton most recently, showing they can compete with established sides, but consistency is the real test.

Ajayi stressed that every fixture demands maximum effort and tactical flexibility, with no room for complacency regardless of opposition. He also dismissed early comparisons to Sunderland's excellent campaign last season—when the Black Cats finished seventh and qualified for Europa League—insisting Hull must forge their own path rather than chase another team's blueprint. With Fulham on the horizon, Hull's next challenge will reveal whether their early-season form is genuine substance or temporary gloss. For betting purposes, backing Ajayi and Hull to stay solid at the back remains a compelling angle, though punters should keep an eye on whether their defensive solidity translates into more wins as the season deepens.
