Portugal boss says door open for Ronaldo return
Retold by Oddsrama · 4 October 2026
Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has signalled that Cristiano Ronaldo's international door remains unlocked, despite the 41-year-old's abrupt exit from the Nations League squad over the weekend. The Al-Nassr captain walked out after learning he would not feature from the start in matches against Norway and Denmark, marking his first competitive appearance on the bench since 2008—a moment that clearly stung the veteran forward.
Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia, has struck a diplomatic tone. He insists the ball is now in Ronaldo's court: the player can return whenever he wishes, though conversations will happen before the next call-up. The manager emphasised continuity, noting he has always wanted Ronaldo close to the squad regardless of playing time. With Portugal sitting six points clear in Group A4 after beating Norway 2-1, Jesus can afford patience. The side hosts Denmark on November 14 and visits Wales three days later—two fixtures where Ronaldo's presence could shift betting dynamics considerably.
Meanwhile, Goncalo Ramos has seized the opportunity with both hands, scoring in all three starts since Ronaldo departed. This form boost could tighten squad competition heading into the knockout stages. Teammates Joao Cancelo and Nuno Mendes have publicly backed Ronaldo's return, framing it as inevitable and welcome—the kind of squad unity that suggests no lasting rift exists. Portugal's status as Nations League defending champions adds extra intrigue; Ronaldo's scoring record of 146 goals in 234 appearances remains unmatched, and his firepower could prove decisive in a knockout tournament.
For bettors tracking Portugal's fixtures, Ronaldo's availability—or continued absence—will be crucial. If he returns, odds on Portugal deepens significantly given his historical impact on their form. If not, Ramos's recent clinical finishing makes Portugal's attacking prospects far less predictable, potentially offering value elsewhere.
