EUROMATCH–NPFL: Yusuf Reveals Why He Left Coton FC For Shooting Stars
Retold by Oddsrama · 13 October 2026
Salisu Yusuf has set the record straight on his departure from Benin Republic's Coton FC, revealing that the split was entirely amicable. The 64-year-old mentor, who had inked a two-year deal with the Beninese outfit following his impressive rescue mission at Nasarawa United in the 2024/2025 EuroMatch–NPFL season, confirmed to journalists that both parties simply agreed it was time to move on. There was no drama, no falling-out—just a professional parting of ways.
Yusuf explained that his time at Coton FC was marked by a solid working relationship with the club's hierarchy and a healthy environment. However, circumstances shifted when the club's owner, Lionel Talon, made a strategic decision to step back from running a high-profile operation following his father's exit from Benin's presidency in May 2026. With the new direction in place, Coton FC pivoted towards operating as a talent development centre rather than chasing top-flight ambitions. That's when Yusuf and the club mutually agreed to call it a day.
The veteran tactician, who has previously managed Nigerian powerhouses like Rangers, Kano Pillars, and Nasarawa United, didn't stay idle for long. Several NPFL clubs came knocking, keen to secure his services. But Yusuf opted to join Shooting Stars Sports Club in Ibadan, where he now serves as Technical Adviser. His arrival adds serious pedigree to 3SC's setup, though they suffered a 2–0 loss to Kun Khalifat in Matchday 8 action. For betting markets, Yusuf's experience could stabilise the Ibadan outfit's form as the season progresses.
