Does the Premier League 'Big Six' still exist?

Does the Premier League 'Big Six' still exist?

The Premier League's so-called 'Big Six'—Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham—have long ruled English football's top tier. These clubs boasted the biggest fanbases, deepest pockets, and most trophy cabinets. But recent seasons have shattered that neat narrative. Tottenham have missed the top six three times since 2021-22, while Manchester United and Liverpool have also slipped out of contention more frequently. Meanwhile, Brighton, Aston Villa, and Newcastle have crashed the party at the summit. Even Manchester City, despite a decade of dominance, now faces uncertainty following financial rule breaches that could reshape the league's power structure.

What's shifted? The financial moat has narrowed dramatically. Newcastle's Saudi-backed takeover thrust them from 11th to fourth in consecutive seasons. Brighton, though, show how smart recruitment beats billionaire spending. They've mastered buying young talent cheaply—Moisés Caicedo for £4m, sold for £115m two years later—and reinvesting profits. Other ambitious clubs have copied this blueprint, meaning the traditional elite can no longer rely on cash alone to dominate.

Looking at the numbers, in the past three seasons, five of the top-six spots have gone to non-'Big Six' clubs—matching the previous eight years combined. Between 2010-11 and 2018-19, these six almost locked down every top spot. Now? In only one of the last six seasons have all six finished inside the top six. Tottenham's recent form is especially dire, sitting second-bottom with just three points after six winless games. For bettors, this volatility makes the title race and European spots far less predictable than years past. The old certainties have evaporated, opening value in outsider odds.
