Why has the ball changed for World Cup semi-finals?

FIFA has swapped out the match ball for the World Cup's knockout stage, ditching the colourful Trionda Official for a sleek gold and black Trionda Final design. The new sphere will take centre stage during both semi-finals—France versus Spain and England against Argentina—as well as the third-place playoff and the final itself. The original Trionda, which featured the red, blue, green and white of the three host nations, did its job across the tournament's opening 100 matches before being retired for the business end.

The name 'Trionda' derives from the Spanish word for 'three waves,' a nod to the three co-hosting countries. FIFA's rebrand celebrates all 16 cities involved in the tournament, with Dallas, Atlanta, Miami and New York–New Jersey (the semi-final and final venues) given pride of place in the design. The remaining 12 host cities—including Guadalajara, Mexico City, Toronto and Vancouver—feature within triangular graphics to acknowledge their contribution to what FIFA calls the biggest World Cup ever staged.

Beyond aesthetics, the fresh ball packs updated AI technology designed to feed real-time ball data to match officials, aiming to speed up decision-making and give referees sharper insights into play. For bettors tracking form and momentum into the knockouts, the ball change is worth noting; unfamiliar equipment can subtly affect how teams play, particularly strikers and set-piece takers who've built rhythm with the original ball across the group and round-of-16 stages.
