Portsmouth goalkeeper legend Knight dies aged 65

Portsmouth Football Club is mourning the loss of Alan Knight, one of English football's most enduring goalkeepers, who has passed away at 65 following a prostate cancer diagnosis made in 2024. Knight's connection to Fratton Park spanned more than two decades, cementing his place as a genuine one-club legend in an era when such loyalty had become increasingly rare.
Between 1978 and 2000, Knight made 801 appearances for Pompey across all competitions, including 683 league outings—a record for a goalkeeper at any single English club that still stands. He made his debut aged just 16, keeping a clean sheet against Rotherham in Division Three, and went on to represent the club across all four divisions. Remarkably, he became the only Portsmouth player ever to compete across four decades, with his final match coming on 3 January 2000, a Division One encounter at Norwich when he was 38 years old. Knight was instrumental in three promotion campaigns, most notably the 1986-87 season when Pompey returned to top-flight football for the first time in 28 years.
Off the pitch, Knight's legacy extended far beyond statistics. He received an MBE for his services to football and was granted the Freedom of the City of Portsmouth. When his cancer diagnosis came in 2024, he chose to speak publicly about it, using his platform to encourage others to seek medical advice early. In his final months, Knight joined a walking football group in Portsmouth, finding strength in community and friendship as he battled his illness. His openness about mental health during treatment—discussing how depression can creep in, but how having mates and family nearby provided essential support—resonated beyond the football world.
Following his retirement, Knight served the club as both coach and ambassador, roles that reflected how deeply the Portsmouth faithful cherished him. "The Legend" remains synonymous with stability, commitment, and what it once meant to build a career at a single club. His death marks the end of an era in English football.
