Alongside Fofana, Sunderland have recruited Austria defender Kevin Danso (on loan from Tottenham with a purchase option), plus defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, and midfielder Jules Ahoka. The squad depth improvements come after a mixed start to the 2026-27 campaign—a loss at Ipswich on the opening weekend, followed by a victory over Fulham. Fofana's final goal contributions in a disrupted 2025-26 campaign at Lyon included two goals and an assist, and his pace and directness should complement Sunderland's approach as they chase European football alongside a top-flight push.
