Heskey: Ngumoha Can Fill In For Salah

Retold by Oddsrama · 20 August 2026

Emile Heskey, the former Liverpool frontman, reckons Rio Ngumoha has the talent to step into Mohamed Salah's boots at Anfield, though the youngster still has plenty of growing pains ahead. Heskey's backing comes after Ngumoha's impressive showings in pre-season friendlies, where Liverpool's coaching staff have tested him on the right flank—a position that differs from his natural left-wing slot. The 17-year-old's explosive dribbling and eye for play suggest serious potential, but readjusting his mentality to thrive on the opposite wing will be critical if he's to fulfil that promise.

The former striker pulled no punches when discussing the scale of the task facing Ngumoha. While the teenager's ability to glide past defenders naturally opens up space and creates overload opportunities across the pitch, Heskey warned that simply matching Salah's goal output is unrealistic at this stage. Salah has redefined Liverpool's attacking template with his clinical finishing and elite consistency—standards that take years to reach. What Heskey does see in Ngumoha, however, is a raw athlete with the foundation to become a major creative force and a proper threat in the final third once his game matures.

Liverpool's current pursuit of PSG wingers Ibrahim Mbaye and Bradley Barcola hints that the Merseysiders aren't relying solely on Ngumoha to solve their right-wing puzzle immediately. That squad-building approach makes sense from both a development and results perspective. For betting purposes, backing Liverpool's attacking output early in campaigns could prove tricky until Ngumoha's transition settles—it's a season-long play watching whether he truly becomes that elite replacement or settles into a supporting role.
